Building a fiberglass mold- the long road
Building a fiberglass pool mold

When it comes to creating a fiberglass pool, one of the essential steps in the process is building a fiberglass pool mold. This intricate and time-consuming task involves several meticulous steps that are crucial to the overall quality and durability of the final product. In this article, we will delve into the detailed process of making a pool mold from fiberglass, starting with the creation of the plug from MDF wood, finishing it to a glossy shine, and finally building the mold inside the plug.
The first step in building a fiberglass pool mold is crafting the plug, which serves as the foundation for the mold. The plug is typically made from MDF wood due to its smooth surface and ability to be easily shaped and manipulated. This initial stage requires precision and attention to detail, as any imperfections in the plug will be transferred to the mold and ultimately to the pool shell itself.
Once the plug is constructed, the next step is to finish it to a glossy shine. This involves sanding, polishing, and applying multiple layers of gelcoat to achieve a smooth and reflective surface. The glossy finish not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the mold but also plays a crucial role in ensuring that the fiberglass pool shell is smooth and free of any defects.
After the plug is polished to perfection, the final stage is to build the mold inside the plug. This process involves applying layers of fiberglass and resin to the plug, allowing it to cure and harden before removing the plug to reveal the mold. The mold must be carefully constructed to ensure that it accurately replicates the shape and dimensions of the plug, as any discrepancies will result in flaws in the pool shell.
Building a fiberglass pool mold is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task that requires patience, skill, and precision. The importance of creating a flawless plug cannot be overstated, as any imperfections will be magnified in the mold and ultimately in the pool shell. Here at Midwest Container Pools we now build our own molds in house to control cost, timelines, and quality. As the fall continues we will have updates on our new pool models we are working on.
